  • 1780 – The first astronomical expedition of the United States. Observers left from Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts to Penobscot Bay, ME to observe a total solar eclipse.
  • 1891 – Inventor Philip B. Downing patented a mailbox design featuring an inner safety door for street mailboxes that protected the contents from the elements or thieves.
